A remote lifestyle has totally changed the way of life for people around the world. At HEALBE, we decided to learn and to show how physical activity, stress levels, and eating habits have changed all over the world.
After studying GoBe smart band users’ data in the U.S., China and Japan, we compared calorie intake, energy burn rates, water balance, stress and other parameters – before and during the lockdown period.
The most significant changes were found when comparing March and April 2020, just when the lockdowns were declared around the world.
We’ve structured the research data to show how the life of HEALBE users has changed in various countries and globally.
All countries
* What does it represent?
The percentage indicates groups of users with the most obvious changes in body parameters (for the sake of simplicity let’s denote them as “red”, “purple” and “turquoise”). The round icons represent parameters GoBe tracks:
– calorie intake;
– calorie intake;
– average pulse;
– water balance;
– sleep quality;
– per-day step count.
** “Minus” sign nearby icon means that during the period of self-isolation, this parameter’s value has shown a negative trend, “plus” sign means that this parameter has shown a positive trend.
For example, a plus sign near the calorie Intake icon
in the purple group means that these users were eating more than
before the lockdown. Minus nearby the sleep icon
means that the participants of the group began to sleep less.
Important! Colors of the groups are used only for the sake of clarity so the purple group in the U.S. and the purple group in China are not related to each other.
26%
*** Digit in a column indicates the change in a parameter in percents compared to the pre-coronavirus era (April to March 2020), an icon indicates the parameter itself: caloric intake, burned calories, water balance, stress level, average pulse per day, sleep quality, steps per day.
For example, “-13”
in the yellow column indicates that in April average
stress level in this group decreased by 13% compared to March.
Red group, which is a quarter of all the users worldwide, the average stress level has decreased by as much as 13% during the lockdown, and sleep duration has increased by 9%.
It’s a very good illustration of how the quality of sleep changes our emotional state and stress.
16%
The hypothesis about the relationship between sleep and stress is also confirmed by the purple group’s data (16% of all users). This group began to sleep worse (by 15%) and, as a result, became more stressed(by 9%).
16%
Data from the turquoise group showed that along with the number of steps, calorie consumption has also decreased. The overtaking majority of participants – women aged 30-50 years have lowered the caloric intake (-11%). At the same time, their physical activity and the number of steps decreased by 2 times, and sleep duration increased by 12%.
USA
30%
One-third of users, the vast majority of whom are women over 30, have changed their habits a little: quality of sleep has improved by 4% and calorie consumption has lowered by 1%. Caloric intake decreased by 3% in this group.
23%
The purple group, mainly users over 30 years, 80% of whom are women, reacted to the lockdown with a rocketed-up activity – the average number of steps increased by 17%.
Caloric intake increased by 9%, along with the 6% rise of burned energy. Sleep became shorter by 27%. Despite this, the stress level decreased by 13%!
During the lockdown period, these users reduced their sleeping time and increased the intensity of training. It seems that morning jogs are as calming as the extra two hours of sleep for them!
23%
The turquoise group also has shown a 17% drop in average stress level and slightly improved sleep quality.
China
In April, when restrictive measures were brought out all over the world, China, on the contrary, lifted the restrictions. So when we look at our Chinese users’ data, we may understand how we will restore after the lockdown.
46%
Almost half of the GoBe users in China, who formed the red group, increased their stress level by 20% after the government lifted the restrictions.
At the same time, the number of steps increased significantly – by 37%, while the average caloric intake rose only by 5%. Average sleep became shorter – minus 14%.
14%
In contrast, in the purple group (14% of GoBe users in China), an average stress level has decreased by a remarkable 20%, while sleep has become more efficient (10%).
Using the cases of the red and purple groups, we understand how sleep duration correlates with the level of stress: if you sleep only 14% less, the stress level increases by as much as 20%! And if you add 10% to your sleeping time, the stress level may decrease by the same 20%.
11%
In the turquoise group, which is 11% of our users in China, activity increased significantly in April 2020. They have taken 207% more daily steps than in March!
At the same time, calorie intake increased by only 15%, while other parameters remained virtually unchanged. Perhaps, this group of users prepares for some kind of bikini season?
Japan
42%
In the Land of the Rising Sun, the red group was made up of Japanese men and women over 30. They’ve started to sleep longer and better – the quality of sleep improved by 11%.
Due to the sleep improvements, the stress level decreased.
30%
GoBe users from the purple group (30% of our Japanese users) – men over 50 – started burning 5% fewer calories. Seems that people from this group tend to live in harmony and self-awareness – their average calorie intake also decreased by 3%.
10%
Step count has considerably decreased by 10% for users from the turquoise group.
Along with that, stress “fell” by 11%, and sleep quality and duration improved by 13%. The average caloric intake fell by 10%, and the water balance, on the contrary, increased by 3%.
Our research does not claim to be scientifically reliable. It is an information slice which we’ve analyzed due to our curiosity and openness of HEALBE GoBe users, for which we are endlessly grateful!
