How to take care of yourself in stress?

It is not always possible to influence the situation, but everyone can change the internal climate and relieve inner tension.

Being under stress, the mind tries to find the answer: what will happen? What could I do?

But often, it gets stuck trying to control the uncontrollable. That’s how begins  “rumination” – mental chewing gum – an obsessive type of thinking in which a person turns in his head the same disturbing thoughts, which only increase the anxiety.

How to support yourself?

1. Try to redirect attention from your head to your body

For example, by doing a small breathing practice “square”: inhale (5 seconds) – hold (5 seconds) – exhale (5 seconds) – hold (5 seconds) and so on.

The best way to get through your emotions is through exercise. You can go for a walk, clean up, or do sports.

Emotional activities can help to let off steam. It can be sparring in single combat, speed challenge, or strength competition.

2. Return to reality from the thought stream

What’s going on around?

Do a simple exercise:

“Now I see / hear / feel …” and list all the colors, sounds, smells, and sensations in the body.

3. Stop criticizing yourself

If your inner critic is furious, try to replace the criticism with words of encouragement.

4. Make a list of what worries you

Perhaps you have been reading the media and posts on social networks for too long, and it’s time to turn off your phone to cut off the information flow.

Stay with yourself without trying to change anything. This is a basic practice that helps to find oneself among the information noise.

5. Express your feelings

○ Through sound: take a good breath, shout or sing a song.

○ Through movement: Select music and let your body move the way it wants to.

○ Through creativity: Try to draw or express your feelings.

6. Find support in your environment.

Even having a video chat with a friend can be very supportive. If you have a resource, do not forget to support those who are worse off.
