FAQ: Calorie intake measurement
Why is there a significant difference between the calories I manually calculated and the calories GoBe automatically tracked?
Does GoBe measure protein intake?
Yes, the GoBe measures protein intake. This information is displayed in the Energy section of the app, on the same screen as your fat and carb intake
I understand that my body’s glucose levels vary based on what proportion of carbs, protein, and fat I eat. If GoBe uses glucose levels to measure calorie intake, will the accuracy be affected by whether I eat a lot of carbs, protein, or fat?
What does the graph on the energy screen of the Healbe GoBe™ app show?
The graph shows calories consumed above the X-axis and calories burned below. You can also see grams of carbs, proteins, and fats on this screen.
How long does it take for GoBe to calculate calorie intake after I eat or drink?
Approximately 15-20 minutes after you eat, glucose concentrations in your blood start to rise. GoBe detects those changes and uses the information to calculate the calories you consumed. The average time it takes to calculate the total amount of calories from a meal is around 2.5 hours, but this time will vary based on what and how much you eat. For example, the average meal at McDonalds (burger, fries, and a Coke) has about 1000 calories, but we know that salt slows down the digestion process. The large amount of salt and calories in a McDonalds meal mean that it will take around 5 hours to be fully digested.
FAQ: Activity and calories burned measurement
What physical activities can GoBe track?
GoBe combines accelerometer data with continuous heart rate monitoring to calculate calories burned during any activity: jogging, swimming, cycling, weight training, and more.
Does GoBe measure how far I walk or run, as well as calories burned from other activities?
Yes. GoBe uses an accelerometer to measure activity and body movement. This sensor counts your steps, as well as the distance you travel. It also uses a pulse wave sensor to measure your blood flow and heart rate, so it can tell when you’re active and when you’re not.
How does GoBe calculate how many calories I burn during the day?
GoBe uses Healbe FLOW™ Technology to combine the data from the body manager’s accelerometer and heart rate sensors with an advanced algorithm to measure calories burned.
Basal metabolic rate
Basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy that a person needs to keep the body functioning at rest. Some of those processes are breathing, blood circulation, controlling body temperature, cell growth, brain and nerve function, and contraction of muscles.
The basal metabolic rate accounts for about 70% of the daily calorie expenditure by individuals.
It is influenced by several factors, such as sex, age, genetics, thyroid function level.
FAQ: Hydration Level
How does GoBe determine how much water I need to consume?
GoBe uses the personal information in your app profile, such as age, height, weight, etc., along with information about your activity level and diet, to determine how much water you need every day.
Does Healbe GoBe™ automatically measure water intake and hydration?
The body manager accurately measures the calories you get from fluids. (Such as soda, juice, or alcohol.) Using FLOW™ technology and an impedance sensor, GoBe automatically tracks the hydration level and helps to keep water balance normal, reminding when it is necessary to drink water. Remember that hydration level depends on multiple factors, including activity and food intake
I compared the heart rate data from GoBe with another app or tracker, and found a big difference. Why?
Most fitness trackers provide very inaccurate heart rate results. To get a better sense of how accurately GoBe measures heart rate, please compare your body manager’s data to a medical-grade pulsometer.
FAQ: Sleep Cycle
In the Sleep section, what does % mean?
0-45% — Very poor quality of sleep, which can result in a very high level of stress
46-60% — Signs of insomnia or other sleep disorders
61-75% — Sleep deprivation
76-90% — Good quality of sleep; a sufficient amount to rejuvenate the body
91-100% — Very good quality of sleep. Kudos, sleepmaster!
FAQ: Stress Level
How does GoBe calculate my stress level?
The GoBe body manager estimates your stress level by conducting a complex analysis of your heart rate data, sleep quality data, and parameters such as weight, height, sex, and age. The Stress section of the app displays a graph of your stress level over a period of 24 hours.
What scale does GoBe use to rate stress?
4—Above Average Stress
FAQ: Healbe FLOW technology
How was Healbe FLOW™ Technology developed?
In 1999, a St. Petersburg-based company called Algorithm set out to develop a model of how glucose is used within the body, with the hopes of developing a device that could monitor glucose levels non-invasively. Algorithm applied the methodology of TRIZ, which is a Theory of Inventive Problem Solving that brings together multiple disciplines to focus on a common problem. The initial working group included an endocrinologist, a psychologist, a mathematician, and a TRIZ analyst. At later stages of the project, the team expanded to include clinical diagnosticians, engineers, and programmers. Development of the basic technology was completed by 2003, including more than 500 internal tests. In 2012, Healbe™ acquired Algorithm’s technology and set out to adapt it to automatically monitor calorie intake and burn. We developed a stream of mathematical models that allowed us to apply the basic technology to a range of physiological processes. The final result is Healbe FLOW™ Technology. Currently, Healbe™ has five separate research groups, each working on perfecting a specific solution within the overall technology: Automatic calorie intake and hydration; calorie burn; continuous heart rate monitoring; sleep; and stress. Healbe GoBe™ is the first product to leverage FLOW Technology.
Does GoBe measure body temperature?
No, GoBe doesn’t measure internal body temperature.
How does GoBe track heart rate? How frequent is the measurement taken?
Does GoBe measure blood oxygen levels?
No, GoBe doesn’t measure the oxygen levels in your blood.
How will Healbe™ continue to test and improve the accuracy of FLOW Technology’s automatic calorie intake measurement?
FLOW Technology’s automatic calorie intake measurement depends on a sophisticated model of the glucose curve—that is, how glucose and water are absorbed and released by your cells in response to calories consumed. Our future efforts will be aimed at increasing the accuracy of our glucose curve model. We are also finalizing a more accurate method of estimating the amount of calories coming from protein in food.
How accurate is GoBe’s calorie intake measurement compared to wearable devices and apps that require users to manually log what they eat and drink?
Trying to track your calorie intake manually can be very inaccurate for several reasons. First, there’s user error. Unless you precisely weigh or measure every bite you eat (including ingredients in prepared meals), you have to rely on estimation. It’s very difficult to correctly estimate the amount of cheese on a particular piece of pizza, or the number of chocolate chips in a cookie. Second, even if you only eat food that comes in a package that provides a calorie count, the actual calories you end up ingesting will differ based on how the food is prepared. For example, the calories in a serving of pasta could vary from 135-320 calories, depending on how well it’s cooked—so if you’re manually tracking your calories, your accuracy can vary greatly. Finally, because of individual differences in metabolism, two people eating exactly the same type and amount of food might actually process different amounts of calories from their meals. There’s no way to account for these differences in metabolism using manual calorie tracking. GoBe is the only way to automatically measure calorie intake. It uses information from your own body, so you don’t have to worry about user error, inaccurate food labels, or individual variations in metabolism.
How accurately does GoBe automatically measure calorie intake, and how has it been tested?
Healbe™ has conducted multiple tests to determine how accurate GoBe is at measuring calorie intake. During the tests, subjects wore GoBe while eating precisely measured meals, and we compared GoBe’s readings with the known calorie content of the food consumed. Currently, the margin of error for calorie intake measurement is 15% compared to calorie counts on food labels. This level of accuracy compares very favorably to the estimation and guesswork of manual calorie tracking—and it’s groundbreaking in terms of measuring calorie intake with no user input. For more details check here.
Does FLOW Technology measure the amount of fats and carbs consumed?
Yes. FLOW Technology measures how many fats and carbs you consume, and the Body Manager’s App provides insights into the macronutrient breakdown of your food. When you eat, carbohydrates and fats from your meal are converted to energy, using two separate physiological mechanisms. The relative proportions of fat and carbohydrates in your meal effect the shape of the glucose curve. Generally speaking, carbohydrate-heavy meals cause rapid uptake of glucose by your cells. Meals containing more fat lead to a slower absorption of glucose. FLOW uses a sophisticated mathematical model to analyze the dynamics of your glucose curve and determine the percentage of calories you consume from carbohydrates vs. fats.
Can a person with diabetes use GoBe to automatically measure their calorie intake?
GoBe is not designed to measure glucose in the treatment of diabetes, and it is not a substitute for regular glucose monitoring. However, a diabetic who uses insulin properly to control his or her blood glucose levels would be able to use GoBe to automatically measure calorie intake.
Does Healbe GoBe™ measure blood glucose levels?
No, GoBe doesn’t directly measure the amount of glucose in the blood. It uses an impedance sensor to measure the flow of liquids in and out of the cells, and uses that data to calculate how glucose is being absorbed into cells in the body’s tissues.
What is the glucose curve?
After you eat, carbohydrates from your meal are converted into glucose in the blood. Insulin triggers your cells to absorb glucose, which is used for energy. In the process, glucose displaces liquids in your cells, and the Body Manager’s impedance sensor measures these changes in cellular structure by sending high- and low-frequency signals through your tissue to determine the volume of the liquids. FLOW evaluates how quickly glucose is absorbed into your cells, and how long cellular glucose levels stay elevated, to calculate the glucose curve. Fat in your meal changes the speed of absorption of glucose, and hence the shape of the glucose curve.
How does Healbe FLOW™ Technology automatically measure calorie intake?
FLOW™ Technology uses readings from an impedance sensor, taken every minute, to measure dynamics of liquid in an extracellular liquid which is bound to entering of a glucose, throughout the day. GoBe measures these changes by sending high and low-frequency signals through your tissue to determine the fluid volume of your cells. Healbe FLOW Technology uses this information about your cell’s changing glucose concentrations to measure calorie intake.
