By now, we hope you have had a chance to try GoBe3’s sleep tracking functions. After all, sleep is extremely important for your health! Today we will go over how to track your sleep with GoBe3.
What is sleep?
Did you know that this question actually stumps many experts? One of the reasons is that, during sleep, the neurons of the cerebral cortex in your brain not only remain active, but instead, activity even increases! It appears that while we sleep, the brain is busy repairing the body and internal organs.
Sleep is needed to restore energy, strengthen the immune system, normalize metabolism, and reduce the risk of developing many diseases.
We can improve these conditions by making sure to get the recommended amount of sleep: 7-8 hours per day for adults.
Scientists have also determined that lack of sleep has unpleasant consequences: getting less than five hours a day increases the risk of heart attack by 45%, and when you sleep for only four hours, your body begins to absorb glucose slower and the risk of diabetes increases.
The Phases of Sleep
Sleep consists of two main phases: slow wave and fast wave sleep, so-named after the types of brainwaves observed during these phases.
The phases alternate, with fast wave sleep taking up more sleep time in children, and slow wave sleep being the predominant phase in adults. Fast wave sleep is significantly different from slow wave sleep: even though your muscles are relaxed during this phase, brain activity in fast wave sleep resembles a person who is awake! People who wake during this stage report vivid, often intense dreams and imagery.
REM Sleep
Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (also known as REM sleep) is the period of fast wave sleep when you dream. While you dream, your blood pressure and heart rate go down, breathing becomes less frequent, and body temperature decreases by several tenths of a degree.
In healthy adults, REM sleep consists of four to six episodes and lasts 20–25% of total sleep time. At the same time, one cycle of fast wave and slow wave sleep lasts for 90 minutes. Deep stages of sleep take up the first half of the night, and fast wave sleep is more common in the second, so we dream more before dawn.
Sleep Quality
Sleep quality helps tracking how close is your total sleep amount for 24 hours to your individual norm.
Wake up easier with REM-alarm. GoBe can search REM phase to wake you at the end of it making your awakening light, pleasant and effective.
