5 causes of insomnia

A good night’s sleep affects the production of hormones and decreases body fat and the sense of hunger.

1. Melatonin

A natural drop in melatonin levels after the age of 25 leads to difficulties with falling asleep. Constant lack of sleep, gallons of coffee, and drinking harm melatonin production.

The easiest way to keep melatonin optimal is to fall asleep before 11 pm and wake up early.

2. Progesterone

Have you ever been in a situation when you get to sleep quickly and on time, but at 4 am you open your eyes and can’t fall asleep again?

It’s all about progesterone, the female sex hormone (which is also present in male organism too). After 35 to 40 years of age, the insufficiency of progesterone causes sleep disturbances in both women and men. But it can start earlier if we suffer from stress.

3. Unbalanced diet

Your diet tends to be unbalanced if, for example, you skip breakfast, have a modest lunch, and have a heavy dinner with lots of sweets.

Because of the abundance of carbohydrates in the afternoon, hypoglycemia (a drop in blood sugar levels below normal) may occur while you sleep. To cope with it, our body mimics the morning cortisol peak that causes us to wake up.

You could usually solve this by reducing your afternoon intake of carbohydrates and improving your diet.

4. Serotonin

Among other things, the “joy hormone” is responsible for getting quality sleep.

Serotonin is produced with the help of vitamin D from the amino acid tryptophan, mostly(80%) in the intestine. Dysbacteriosis or leaky gut syndrome can cause a low level of serotonin.

You can raise your serotonin level by doing things that please you or by increasing your intake of the amino acid tryptophan, which is common in many crops, meats, cocoa, dark chocolate, bananas, seafood, and nuts.

5. Apnea

Sleep apnea syndrome is a serious condition in which a person stops breathing for 20 to 30 seconds while sleeping. Breathlessness may sometimes be as long as 3 minutes.

The most common cause of apnea is overweight. The wider and shorter the neck, the higher the risks.
